Drive Across America
04:37
|
|||
Dark New England morning, windswept rocky shore
I've lived all my life here, but I wanted something more
There's a girl in the other Portland so I packed up my Ford
To Drive Across America
I would take I-90, pass through Buffalo
Drive this road 3,000 miles till I reach Tokio
And when I hit 395 there's 100 miles to go
Till I reach the Columbia
It's springtime west of Cleveland, and as far as I can see
A pink and white kaleidoscope of a million blooming trees
I feel the cold wind reach my face off mighty Lake Erie
As I'm passing through Elyria
Fifteen hours later, I've finally reached the plains
The great Coteau des Prairies topped with amber waves of grain
There are storm clouds in the distance bringing badly needed rain
Just north of Spencer, Iowa
I see the mountains rising as the sun is getting low
But I can't stop to rest now, there are many miles to go
Majestic hues of twilight guide me down the winding road
As I'm driving west through Montana
Now it's 3am in Idaho and I'm the only car
Above my head a meteor is streaking 'cross the stars
A sign says "Spokane: 30 miles" so I can't be that far
From getting to Portlandia
Bright Pacific morning where the Cascades touch the sky
I'm driving into Portland as the Willamette rolls on by
Now it's time for me to find my girl, the only reason why
I drove across America
But now that I'm in Portland she's nowhere to be found
I search the city high and low and she is not around
Until I see on Facebook that she took the last Greyhound
That was headed to Astoria, Queens

Let Me Take You Home
02:21
|
|||
Hey there baby I'd like to know your name
Let's get to the point, I don't want no silly games
Let me buy you a drink then we'll head out the door
That dress would look much better if it laid on my floor
Let me take you home
You don't wanna be alone
Or else you wouldn't be here
Baby you know that I could treat you right
Just give me the word and I'll keep you up all night
Baby we can do anything you want
When girls come to the bedroom they call me a savant
Let me take you home
You don't wanna be alone
Or else you wouldn't be here
Let me take you home
You don't wanna be alone
Or else you wouldn't be here
Come on baby let's get out of this bar
I live two blocks away it's not very far
You're looking so good and I don't wanna be alone
Let's get out of here baby just let me take you home
Let me take you home
You don't wanna be alone
Or else you wouldn't be here

Slip Away
02:31
|
|||
Friday afternoon there's traffic on the beltway
And I turned my radio on
A few sweet tunes revitalized my muse
And I thought up a brand new song
But when I got home I felt so tired
I decided to call it a day
So I let another song just slip away
Saturday night I was riding on the metro
When a pretty lady got on the train
I was thinking 'bout who she was and where she came from
And a song began to form in my brain
But when I took out my notebook to write it all down
I realized I'd forgotten my pen
And I forgot the song before the train ride came to an end
Sunday morning I went down to church
And the choir music flowed through my ears
And maybe by sheer luck or divine intervention
A new song began to appear
I reached out to grasp it and it slipped through my hands
Before I got a chance to pray
And just like that I let another song slip away

City Song
03:59
|
|||
Played my music in my small town
But who would listen when no one's around
I went to the city to earn my fame
Wanted the world to remember my name
Traveled the streets, saw the sights
I was bewildered with all of the lights
I felt inspired to write some new songs
The city seemed like the place I belonged
Spent three years in an 8-by-8 room
One thousand nights I spent trying to write tunes
But when I looked out my window to see starry skies
All I saw were towers bathed in orange and white
I became frustrated by machines and by cars
Missed the singing of birds and the twinkling of stars
I longed for the sound of the wind in the trees
And the touch of grass as it lay beneath my feet
I'd been changed by the noise and forgotten my sound
Took the train back to my old stomping grounds
Saw the winding roads and the picturesque views
And the silence of nature brought me back my muse
I've seen many artists with stars in their eyes
But the city devours them, their star flames out and dies
But the greatest musicians write just what they know
And the place I know best is the place I still call home

Ignorance
03:41
|
|||
I know you aren't innocent
So don't feign ignorance
Did you know that I can scry the eyes
To know when someone lies?
Too long have I crawled on my belly
Over broken glass
So you don't have to see your reflection
Too long have I starved myself
So you could spit out your food
Too long have I held my breath
So you could complain about the silence
When you wander in the desert
And cry out for a savior
Will you realize those are my footprints
Resting in the sand?

Screaming down the highway
Flying down the road
Thoughts on the horizon
Off to parts unknown
Sunset kisses fields of green
An asphalt highway breaks the sea
In the distance, rolling thunder
The silent piece is torn asunder
A black car races towards the sun
Inside, a driver on the run
He looks for any cops around
Then quickly slams the pedal down
Stars above to guide me
Curse the morning light
Screaming down the highway
Howling to the night

Bitter Man
04:24
|
|||
Bitter man walks into the bar
Whiskey comes in a mason jar
Starts to moan about this new place
Doesn't seem to like any change
Back when he was a growing boy
Playing outdoors with all his toys
He dreamt he'd be a famous man
Singing songs for a million fans
Grew into a stylish teen
Captain of the football team
Thought that one day he'd still be king
Won't have to work for anything
Twenty five years have come and gone
Never did write that trendy song
Now he works at a hometown store
Doesn't chase his dreams anymore
Tells the young kids tales of his youth
Not that most of them are the truth
Tries to make old age go away
Reminiscing of glory days
Bitter man walks back to his home
Smell of whiskey sticks to his clothes
Thoughts of nostalgia fill up his mind
Cannot leave the past behind

Lovely is the Sea
02:48
|
|||
Lovely is the sea
Miles and miles of sapphire
Softly shimmering
In the depths I see
A porcelain face and two eyes
Brightly glimmering
Staring back at me
She sings a song that I find
So bewildering
I cannot break free
Dive right in to keep my mind
From splintering
Drowned in misery
Reach out for her as my breath's
Swiftly withering
Lovely is the sea

Something's in the Water
02:55
|
|||
Something's in the water
Think I felt it slide down my throat
Passing through my stomach
Now I feel it tingling my toes
Starting to think strange things
Something's swimming inside my brain
Kinda makes me feel good
I don't know if I'll be the same
Got a new perspective
Seeing things in different lights
Thoughts that used to feel wrong
Now appear to be justified
I need some more water
Don't know when this craving will end
Starting to get ugly
Making enemies of my friends
I am someone different
Cannot recognize my own face
I've become the monster
People told me I used to hate
Something's in the water
Something that I can't live without
Think I'm going crazy
Maybe what I need is a drought

Take me Home
05:25
|
|||
Go tell my wife I love her
Tell my kids I won't be there for super
The good Lord knows that I will suffer
The devil's come to take me home
Ten years ago I sold my soul
To play the greatest rock and roll
But now the bell's begun to toll
The devil's come to take me home
Muhammed, Vishnu, or Yahweh
No one hears my pleas today
It doesn't matter to which God I pray
The devil's come to take me home
Nothing matters, the cash, the cars,
The songs I played on my guitar
For now I see The Morning Star
The devil's come to take me home
I can't be saved from this despair
I try to cry out every prayer
But the smell of brimstone fills the air
The devil's come to take me home
Go to my wife I love her
Tell my kids I won't be there for supper
And the good Lord knows that I will suffer
The devil's come to take me home

Rose
05:10
|
|||
My best friend
So good to see you again
Wonder how long it will be this time
See the clouds rolling in
And her little grin
Passes like a ship in the middle of the night
See the weather change
Open hands clench to fists of rage
See the pain blazing in her eye
A living hell
She must fight alone inside herself
An enemy from which she cannot hide
Try to calm her down
Hoping maybe she will come around
I just want more time with my best friend
Her smile briefly returns
Moments later she begins to burn
And in a flash she is gone again

Auburn Hair
03:36
|
|||
He woke up one morning and she was there
The girl with waves of auburn hair
And when she turned to meet his gaze
He knew he'd love her till the end of days
He looked in her eyes and saw a mighty ocean
Beating in his chest a drum of pure emotion
Swimming in his mind a thought of life together
He looked to the heavens and prayed for love forever
But he gazed at the sunrise a bit too long
His eyes looked back and she was gone
He wished he could still see her there
The girl with waves of Auburn Hair

The Perfect Diamond
04:40
|
|||
I've been minin' for the perfect diamond
That I saw once before
Ever since I looked into its center
I have wanted nothing more
I've found sapphires that could feed a thousand
Dug up rubies the size of my skull
But none of them moved me like that perfect diamond
Nothing makes my heart feel as full
I have found this world's greatest treasures
But none of them shine as bright as the sun
Oh I'll keep on minin' for that perfect diamond
Until the end of time has come
Everyone has their own perfect diamond
Something they've felt once before
A childhood treasure, a fleeting memory
A relationship they want restored
But as we go through this life searching for that perfect diamond
We throw the other jewelry away
And at the end of the line we come up with nothing
But hands full of muddy clay
